Squaremouth — Compare 100+ Travel Insurance Plans

4.5/5

battleface's Discovery plan includes trip cancellation and sells medical, evacuation and interruption as add-on packages. It covers 200+ activities cheaply - but its in-trip service score is the weak point.

The verdict

  1. battleface's Discovery plan is the right shape when you want to pay for the benefits you need and skip the rest. Trip cancellation at 100% of trip cost is built in; emergency medical, evacuation and trip interruption are optional packages you add. That is the opposite of a tier ladder, and it is why the marketplace calls battleface "among the most affordable travel insurance companies on the market." It is sold on Squaremouth, so you can compare live quotes on Squaremouth and see the add-on pricing against rivals' fixed bundles.
  2. Buy it for adventure travel, not for service. battleface covers more than 200 sports and activities, which is the headline. But its Squaremouth customer ratings as of September 2026 are 4.09 out of 5 for service before the trip and only 2.63 out of 5 for service during the trip. That is a real asymmetry, and it is the plan's biggest risk.
  3. Do not buy Discovery unless you will actually configure it. A Discovery policy bought without the medical package is a cancellation-only policy. If you want protection to arrive by default, this is the wrong architecture.

battleface launched in 2018 and sells something structurally different from a comprehensive plan. Instead of Basic-Better-Best, you get a base and a menu. We read the marketplace's plan tables against battleface's own US site to work out what that menu actually holds.

How Discovery is built

On Squaremouth's benefit table, Discovery reads oddly at first glance. As of September 2026:

BenefitDiscoveryMulti-Trip Annual
Emergency medicalOptional$250,000 secondary
Evacuation and repatriationOptional$500,000
Trip cancellation100% of the trip cost$1,500 per person
Trip interruptionOptional$2,250 per person

Three of Discovery's four headline benefits say "Optional." That is not a gap in the table — it is the product. Trip cancellation comes standard at 100% of prepaid, non-refundable trip costs; everything else is a package you buy.

The ceilings on those packages are real, though. With Discovery you can add up to $100,000 in secondary emergency medical coverage and up to $500,000 in medical evacuation. The marketplace's own guidance is that an adventure trip wants at least $100,000 in emergency medical and between $250,000 and $500,000 in evacuation — so a fully configured Discovery sits right at the top of that band. What it will not do is reach the $1,000,000 evacuation limits that top-tier comprehensive plans carry. If you want to size the number to your own destination rather than accept a default, the coverage estimator does it in a minute.

One structural detail matters when you configure: the benefits are sold as bundles, not individually. Emergency medical and medical evacuation come packaged together; travel delay and missed connection come in another. You are choosing between a handful of bundles rather than a long list of checkboxes — which makes the process faster than it sounds, but also means you will occasionally buy a benefit you did not want in order to get one you did.

The adventure case

This is where battleface earns its reputation. Its plans cover more than 200 unique sports and activities, which is more than most providers on the Squaremouth panel, and coverage extends to over 185 destinations. The insurer's own activities pages run through mountain biking, winter sports, scuba diving, mountaineering, kayaking and rafting, kitesurfing and sailing.

For an adventure traveler this solves the problem that sinks most comprehensive plans: a conventional policy defines a list of "adventure or extreme activities" and then excludes participation in them, so the more interesting your trip, the less your policy does. battleface inverts that. Pair the activity breadth with an added medical package and you have a plan that is both cheap and genuinely applicable — our comparison of hiking and scuba diving coverage sets out how differently insurers draw that line, and our World Nomads Explorer review covers the other brand built around the same idea, using colour-coded activity tiers instead of a menu.

Two eligibility notes. battleface excludes travelers who are 85 or older. And most Discovery benefits are secondary coverage, meaning you claim on your own health insurer first and battleface reimburses the remainder — more paperwork, slower settlement.

The service problem, stated plainly

We do not think a review should bury this. battleface's aggregate Squaremouth rating is 4.02 out of 5 across 103 reviews as of September 2026, and its TrustPilot score is 4.4 out of 5. Split those out, though, and the picture changes:

  • Customer service before the trip: 4.09 out of 5
  • Customer service during the trip: 2.63 out of 5
  • Customer service during a claim: 3.42 out of 5

Pre-sale support is strong; in-trip support is the weakest score of any provider category on the panel. Non-insurance assistance services are provided by Robin Assist LLC, a platform battleface launched in 2023. If your worst case involves needing someone to answer the phone in a foreign hospital at 3am, that 2.63 deserves more weight than any coverage limit in this article.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits the budget-conscious adventure traveler whose trip cost is modest but whose activity list is long. Paying for cancellation plus one medical bundle, and skipping delay and baggage cover you would never claim, is a rational trade — see our analysis of genuinely cheap travel cover for when that logic holds.

It suits the frequent traveler considering the annual plan. Multi-Trip Annual is one of very few annual policies that includes any trip cancellation cover at all, at $1,500 per person, with $250,000 secondary medical and $500,000 evacuation standard across a 364-day period. Our annual multi-trip analysis covers whether that maths works for your travel pattern, and our digital nomad guide covers the long-stay version.

It does not suit anyone who wants a plan to be safe by default. Discovery bought carelessly is a cancellation-only policy sold to someone who believes they have medical cover. That is the failure mode, and it is entirely avoidable — but only if you read the configuration screen.

It does not suit travelers prioritising in-trip support, for the reason above. And it does not suit anyone who needs primary medical or the very highest evacuation ceilings.

A note on sourcing. battleface.com returned HTTP 403 to our HTTP/2 requests on 22 September 2026 and served only when we requested the page over HTTP/1.1; the figures above therefore come from Squaremouth's plan tables and from battleface's own US pages once they resolved. battleface's own site shows three US products — Single-Trip Discovery, Single-Trip Scout and Multi-Trip Annual — while Squaremouth carries two of them, so the Scout plan is a direct-only purchase. Coverage on the US site is described as issued under policy series RIG-1000, offered and administered by battleface Insurance Services LLC; Squaremouth reports the policies as underwritten by Spinnaker Insurance Company, which holds an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best. Our look at whether Squaremouth is worth using covers what a panel adds, and you can check plan pricing on HelloSafe as a second engine. One caution: Squaremouth's battleface page states in one paragraph that both plans offer up to $100,000 in emergency medical, while its own table and a later paragraph put Multi-Trip Annual at $250,000. Read the benefit schedule you are issued, not the summary.
